After a strong qualifying to claim Pole Position, Carlos Sainz took his fourth win with Ferrari at Mexico City!
Once the lights went out, Mexico was already faced with drama as Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda clipped wheels resulting in Tsunoda barrelling into the barriers which ended his and Albon’s race early while Gasly drove on with no damage to his car.
During the collision between the three drivers, Max Verstappen made a quick dive on Carlos Sainz to take the lead before the safety car was deployed for the next nine laps.
Lap nine saw Sainz setting the fastest lap with a time of 1:21.282 before he pulled wide on Verstappen as he took the lead for the rest of the race.
Verstappen was met with more disappointment on lap 10 as Lando Norris took the opportunity to make an overtake but was forced off track by Verstappen at turn 5 then later Verstappen left the track to gain an advantage at turn 7 as the two swerved off track it had given Charles Leclerc the chance to zoom past the two to claim P2. Verstappen was handed two ten-second penalties for forcing Norris off track and leaving track to gain an advantage.
Lap 15 George Russell provided a challenge to his teammate as the two battled it out before Russell made the dive down at turn 1 to claim P5 from his teammate.
Sadly, during Lap 16 Fernando Alonso had his 400th Grand Prix cut short when he was forced to retire from the race due to brake cooling issues after a strong weekend.
Lap 18 saw Sergio Perez battling it out with Kiwi RB driver, Liam Lawson, on turn 5 when Perez made a dive to try and take the P10 position from Lawson. Lawson had strong defences up and left no room for Perez to get past, which had forced Perez to go off track.
Perez shared his frustrations of the radio by saying “what the **** is this idiot doing? Is he ok?!” While Lawson complained over his radio with “is he **** serious?!”
Lap 63 saw Leclerc and Norris in a battle for P2. Leclerc defended well but sadly lost control of the car at turn 17 as he went off track which allowed Norris to breeze past to claim P2. Leclerc tried to chase down the Mclaren but could not catch up and had to opt out of the chase as he moved down into P3.
Hamilton came back on Russell during lap 66 to provide his own challenge after the two had been battling it out for over 12 laps, Hamilton made the quick dive on Russell at turn 1 to claim P4 off Russell. Russell made the attempt to take the place back but had failed.
Finally on lap 71 Sainz crossed the finish line to take his fourth win at Ferrari at Mexico being followed by Norris in P2 and Leclerc in P3. Teams at the last minute tried to take the fastest lap, but Leclerc won with a time of 1:18.336.
