After a day of heavy rain, Lando Norris takes the Sprint Race win in Miami!
Pre-Sprint
Charles Leclerc’s day started with disappointment after he went into the barrier at turn 16 ending his Sprint Race early before it begun.
Formation Lap
The formation lap started behind the safety car to clear up some of the rain out on track, but the spray was affecting the driver’s visibility, with most reporting this on their radios:
“I can’t see anything behind the safety car!” – Antonelli
“The visibility is genuinely the worst I have ever had in this car.” – Piastri
After hearing feedback from the drivers, the Red Flag was waved for the drivers to return to the pits with the session set to be restarted.
Session restart
The session restarted, with two laps driven behind the safety car. Once the two laps were done, a standing start was decided to get the Sprint Race fully started.
Lights out (Lap 3)
As the lights went out, Oscar Piastri and Kimi Antonelli went head-to-head into Turn 1 with Piastri taking the lead as Antonelli found himself going off track, moving down from P1 to P4.
Lap 12
Lap 12 saw drivers change from the intermediates into slicks with Yuki Tsunoda being the first as he moved onto mediums.
Ferrari then took a leap of faith as they switched Lewis Hamilton onto soft tyres.
Lap 13
The disappointment continued for Antonelli as he made his way down the pit lane where Red Bull released Max Verstappen into the path of the Mercedes which saw damage to Verstappen’s Front Wing and Antonelli not getting a chance to pit.
The drama continued as Carlos Sainz hit his left rear tyre on the barrier into Turn 14 which caused a puncture, ending his race early.
Later Piastri pitted which caused Norris to take the Race Lead.
Lap 14
Hamilton wasted no time to move up the leaderboard as he breezed past Verstappen with ease to claim P3.
Lap 15
Lap 15 saw the return of the Safety Car due to Liam Lawson colliding with Fernando Alonso into Turn 13, ending Alonso’s race.
Lap 18
As the Safety Car ended, Norris claimed the Sprint race win with Piastri in P2 and Hamilton in P3!
Post-Sprint Race
After the Sprint Race, the following penalties were given out:
Liam Lawson – 5 second time penalty and 1 penalty point for forcing a collision with car 18 (Alonso).
Oliver Bearman – 5 second time penalty for an unsafe release.
Alex Albon – 5 second time penalty for a breach of minimum Safety Car ECU time.
