Race review: From Melbourne disappointment to Zandvoort Podium Highs for Isack Hadjar!

Oscar Piastri wins at Zandvoort while Isack Hadjar soars to the Podium!

Lights out 

As the lights went out, Oscar Piastri had a strong start to begin his lead of the race!

Max Verstappen made a dive around Lando Norris, which saw Verstappen lockup before he quickly recovered to take P2!

Lap 9

On lap 9, Norris chased down Verstappen as he claimed back his P2 position!

Which saw motivation being shared on the radio by his engineer:

“Nice job, let’s get Oscar.”

Lap 16

Franco Colapinto had the pace but it was evident his teammate was faster, Alpine made a call for the two to swap positions as Pierre Gasly moved up into P14 with Colapinto moving down to P15.

Lap 23

On lap 23, Lewis Hamilton was met with disappointment as he collided with the barrier into Turn 3 which brought out the Safety Car.

His engineer quick to check in on the radio:

“Are you ok?”

“Yeah, I’m so sorry, guys.” – Hamilton 

Lap 26

As the safety car ended, Carlo Sainz and Liam Lawson found themselves clipping wheels. It left Lawson loosing a wheel with Sainz facing his own wheel and front wing damage.

“He’s just so stupid, oh my god, this guy, it’s always the same guy!” – Sainz 

Lap 33

In a surprising turn of events, Sainz was handed a ten second time penalty for the incident with Lawson due to causing a collision. Sainz shared his frustrations over the radio:

“We do get a penalty, us, 10 second that we’ll serve at the pit stop.”

“Who?! Who gets a penalty?! Me?!” – Sainz 

“You get.”

“Are you joking? You’re joking. I mean, it’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard in my life.” – Sainz

Lap 41

Mercedes made their own driver swap as George Russell moved down to P7 and Kimi Antonelli moved up to P6!

Lap 54

Kimi Antonelli pitted for softs which saw him rejoining P8, Charles Leclerc made the same move as he pitted for soft to rejoin P7!

As Antonelli chased down Leclerc, the two clipped wheels as Leclerc went into the barrier at turn 3, which brought out the safety car! 

Ferrari being face with double disappointment as Leclerc’s race ended early while Leclerc was quick to share his thoughts on the radio:

“I think that was unnecessary. We can never know what happened but the tyres felt good, anyway, the tyres felt good. Anyways, I’m getting out.” – Leclerc 

 Lap 57

Antonelli was quickly handed a ten second time penalty for causing a collision before being handed a five second time penalty for also speeding in the pit lane. 

Lap 60

As the Safety Car ended, Yuki Tsunoda made a quick chase before overtaking Gabriel Bortoleto for P12! 

Lap 64

Lance Stroll held a quick chase before he breezed past Gasly to claim P9!

Lap 66

Norris had his race ended early as he was faced with engine oil leak issues:

“I got smoke coming from in the cockpit, I think I smell something funny.” – Norris

Norris ended up stopping on track which brought out the Safety Car.

“Oil leak, I’m out.” – Norris 

“Okay, can you bring it back.”

“****, I’m out.” – Norris 

“You were fast today.” 

“I know, I know, it doesn’t matter now.” – Norris

Lap 72

Oscar Piastri crossed the finish line to claim the Zandvoort win as he was followed behind by Max Verstappen in P2 and in P3, after his season started with disappointment, Isack Hadjar crossed the line to claim his first ever Formula One Podium! 

Post-race 

Hamilton’s day seemed to get worse as he was handed a five grid place penalty for the next race due to failing to slow under yellow flag conditions. 

With Monza up next, we will get to see how Hamilton will perform in qualifying with the penalty looming over head.
